Recently, I have been approached to help with the SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) of a website. My first answer is always that every business and organisation should have a blog as Google and other search engines like us to update the content of our websites regularly. But there are lots of other things to consider and it can all cause massive overwhelm and leave us at a point where we just want to forget about it all.
Basically the key to effective Search Engine Optimisation is to keep content as well as keywords as updated and relevant as possible. Finding the right keywords for SEO is essential to encourage more people to visit your website.
Below the steps to finding the right keywords for SEO
Step 1: Find the right keyword phrases. This is easier said than done, as you will need A LOT of keyword phrases to get started. Those keyword phrases need to be focused on the topics your business or organisation is about. Think of 5 – 10 topics that are relevant, then come up with 5 – 10 keyword phrases for each one. If you need help with this, then read my free guide ‘5 easy steps to research relevant keywords for SEO’ and use the worksheets to get this step done.
Step 2: Refine and rank your keyword phrases. Look at what your competitors are doing and use some helpful and free tools you can find on the internet like Google Analytics Keyword Planner, Google Trends or SEMRUSH . Rank them in order of relevance and estimated traffic and get rid of the ones that are of no quality.
Step 3: Decide on a focus keyword phrase for each web page or blog post. Once you have your set of lovely keyword phrases you need to marry them up with the pages and blog posts of your website. The key here is to regularly do this. Schedule in a keyword review every three months (big brands and corporations do this weekly!!), rank your keyword phrases and then review the SEO of your website. This way you can make sure that traffic to your website increases.
